Snowy Mountains. Southern Highlands – New South Wales
The Snowy Mountains are the highest Australian mountain range and contain the Australian mainland’s highest mountain, Mount Kosciuszko. This is mainland Australia’s only true Alpine region with large natural snowfalls every winter.
Nestled in the mountains are world-class ski resorts that attract hundreds of thousands of skiers each winter. Although Australia’s snow season is quite short by international standards – June to October, the facilities available in the main centres of Thredbo, Perisher- Blue Cow and others cater for all tastes and levels of expertise.
In spring and summer brilliant wildflowers cover the fields with a patchwork of colour, mountain streams run full with melting snow, and bushwalkers, campers, anglers, white-water rafters and mountain-bike riders arrive to savour the warm weather delights of this diverse and spectacular region of Australia. Another notable attraction of the region are the lakes, dams and hydro power stations, Australia’s largest engineering works to date, created as part of the Snowy River Hydro Electric project developed during the 1950’s.
